How to Create a Transparent Signature Image for Documents and PDFs

A transparent signature PNG can be inserted into any document without a visible white box. Here is how to extract your handwritten signature from paper and use it digitally.

Inserting a scanned signature into a document often produces a white box around it — the scanned paper background showing through. On a white document this is barely visible, but on anything with a background colour or image, it looks unprofessional.

The solution is a transparent signature PNG: a file that contains only the signature strokes with a transparent background. When you place it in a document, only the ink is visible — no white box, no paper texture, no background rectangle.

Where transparent signature images are used

  • Contracts and legal documents — insert directly on the signature line
  • PDF forms — sign digitally without printing and scanning
  • Business correspondence — add a personal signature to emails and letters
  • Google Docs and Word documents — insert as an image above the signature line
  • Invoices — professional, personalised appearance without a scan box

A transparent signature is also more versatile than a scanned JPEG. If the document background changes — a coloured header, a watermark, a branded template — the signature still sits cleanly on top of it.

How to get the best scan to work from

  • Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen — black or blue works best
  • Use even lighting when photographing — no harsh shadows across the signature
  • Keep the paper flat — creases create noise that the AI has to deal with
  • Fill a reasonable portion of the frame — avoid tiny signatures in a large photo

A photo from a phone camera in good lighting works fine. You do not need a dedicated scanner. The AI handles the rest — detecting the ink strokes and discarding the paper background.

How to use the transparent signature in a PDF

In Adobe Acrobat: use the Edit PDF tool, then Insert Image, and position over the signature field. In Preview on Mac: open the PDF, use Tools > Annotate > Signature, or simply insert the PNG as an image. In Google Docs: Insert > Image > Upload from computer, then resize and position.

Once the PNG is positioned correctly, flatten the document before sending. In most apps this means exporting or printing to PDF rather than saving the working file.
